Stocks are slightly higher on 1-yr anniversary of market bottom

With little in the way of economic reports or earnings to help drive shares higher, investors are taking a breather after major indexes rose the past few weeks.

Stocks have surged over the last year. The Dow Jones industrial average is up 61.2 percent during that stretch. But traders’ expectations about an economic recovery have also grown. That means it will take more than just an occasional upbeat economic report or earnings release to send stocks up.

Stocks are also seen as more fairly priced now, so it will take exceeding higher expectations for growth and economic recovery to help sustain a rally.

Overseas, Asian stocks were little changed, while European shares fell. A few disappointing earnings reports and renewed concerns about how banks will perform once stimulus measures are removed helped push major indexes in Europe lower.

In late morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 11.03, or 0.1 percent, to 10,563.55. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 0.22, or less than 0.1 percent, to 1,138.28, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 2.85, or 0.1 percent, to 2,335.06.

Stocks are higher after AIG agreed to sell its Asian division and as Manufacturing growth slowed in February

Stocks are higher after AIG announced its biggest asset sale since being rescued by the government. A report of continued growth in manufacturing also lifted the market.

The Institute for Supply Management says Monday that its manufacturing index fell to 56.5 in February from 58.4 in January. The reading is below the 58 economists predicted. But the report finds that employment in manufacturing is improving.

Stocks rose after AIG agreed to sell its Asian life insurance business to Britain’s Prudential PLC for $35.5 billion. The deal is a sign of confidence in the economy.

In early morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 48.30, or 0.5 percent, to 10,373.56. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 6.00, or 0.5 percent, at 1,110.49, while the Nasdaq composite index is up 14.67, or 0.7 percent, at 2,252.93.

Stocks are lower on mixed signals from jobs report

Stocks fell Friday following mixed news from the Labor Department’s monthly employment report. The Dow Jones industrial average dipped below the 10,000 mark.

The unemployment rate unexpectedly fell in December to 9.7 percent from 10 percent, even though analysts expected a slight increase.

At the same time, however, employers cut 20,000 jobs, more than the 5,000 economists expected, according to Thomson Reuters. The two numbers are calculated from different surveys.

The Dow fell 44.51, or 0.5 percent, to 9,957.67 in morning trading. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 4.47, or 0.4 percent, to 1,058.64, while the Nasdaq composite index fell 5.73, or 0.3 percent, to 2,119.70.

Overseas markets also mostly fell, reacting to China tightening its monetary policy and boosting bank reserve requirements, in addition to the worse-than-expected results from the world’s biggest aluminum producer.

As one of the first companies in the Standard & Poor’s 500 index to report quarterly results, Alcoa’s earnings are often seen as a barometer for how companies will fare.

After the market closed Monday, Alcoa said it earned a penny a share excluding one-time items and special charges. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters, on average, forecast earnings of 6 cents per share.

The company said higher metal prices were offset by ongoing weakness in aerospace, construction and gas turbines businesses.

Revenue also fell at Alcoa. Investors will be tracking revenue as companies report earnings over the next few weeks for any signs that customers are returning to the marketplace. Upbeat earnings in recent quarters have often been due to cost cutting and not revenue growth.

However, a strong economic recovery is dependent on a rebound in consumer and corporate spending, which would result in improving revenue.

Video game publisher Electronic Arts Inc. did not see a rebound in sales during the most recent quarter. It slashed its full-year earnings forecast after the market closed Monday, saying ongoing weakness in game sales didn’t ease up over the holidays.

In morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 54.03, or 0.5 percent, to 10,609.96. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 7.25, or 0.6 percent, to 1,139.73, while the Nasdaq composite index fell 14.75, or 0.6 percent, to 2,297.66.

Alcoa shares fell $1.26, or 7.2 percent, to $16.19. Electronic Arts shares declined $1.63, or 8.9 percent, to $16.64.

Stocks are slightly lower on the heels of ISM and ADP reports

Stocks slipped on Wednesday after ISM data showed the U.S. services sector grew in December, but at a marginal pace, and a report said the rate of job losses slowed at U.S. private employers.

The Institute for Supply Management said its services index rose to 50.1 in December from 48.7 in November. The reading was below economists’ forecast of 50.5, according to a Reuters survey. A reading above 50 indicates expansion.

The non-farm payrolls report from the U.S. Labor Department is due on Friday, with economists now forecasting 8,000 jobs lost overall in December versus the 11,000 lost in November.

Earlier data on Wednesday in the ADP Employment Services report, a precursor to Friday’s payrolls report, showed a smaller-than-expected slowdown in job losses in December.

The Dow Jones industrial average dipped 7.26 points, or 0.07 percent, to 10,564.69. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index shed 1.08 points, or 0.10 percent, to 1,135.44. The Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 7.13 points, or 0.31 percent, to 2,301.58.

Stocks are higher amid good news on retail sales

Stocks are slightly higher in early trading as investors returning from a long holiday weekend respond to good news on retail sales.

Data released Monday shows shoppers opened their wallets more this holiday season, a good sign that consumers are feeling better about the economy.

Keeping the market’s gains in check, airline stocks are falling after two security incidents this weekend.

Overseas markets are higher, too. The dollar is falling against other currencies, giving commodities prices a boost. Bond prices are lower ahead of an auction of two-year notes.

In early trading, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 16.02 points, or 0.15 percent, at 10,536.12. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index added 1.85 points, or 0.16 percent, at 1,128.33. The Nasdaq Composite Index rose 2.83 points, or 0.12 percent, at 2,288.52.
