Stocks slip after jobs, inflation reports
Stocks edge lower after jobs, inflation reports; Dollar tumbles again
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks edged lower Thursday after another disappointing report on jobs. But losses were limited because traders expect the Federal Reserve will act soon to strengthen the economy.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 10 points in morning trading. In recent months, a disappointing weekly jobs report would have likely led to a big sell-off in stocks. However losses have been limited following weak economic reports recently because such weakness supports expectations the Fed will step in to support growth.
Traders sent the dollar lower and gold higher Thursday because of the expected Fed action. The Fed is expected to buy government bonds, which would drive down interest rates down from already low levels. That makes gold and other currencies where interest rates are higher more attractive than the dollar.
Gold hit another record high, while the dollar fell to a 15-year low against the yen and touched its lowest level against the euro since January.

Stocks dip as traders await Fed meeting details
Traders become cautious before Federal Reserve releases notes from September meeting
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are inching lower as traders are cautious before the Federal Reserve releases minutes from its September meeting.
The details could provide clues about the central bank’s widely expected plans to stimulate the economy through stepped-up bond purchases. The Fed has hinted it is prepared to help jump-start the economy, though it provided few details about its plans.
Small gains in the technology sector helped the market pare early losses.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 26, or 0.2 percent, to 10,985 in midday trading Tuesday.

Stocks pare losses on modest rise in home sales
Unemployment claims and worries about Europe’s economy keep US stock prices in check
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks started lower Thursday on new signs of trouble in Europe’s economy but trimmed their losses after slightly better news came out on home sales and leading indicators.
Market indexes were mixed in late morning trading after a gauge of future economic activity rose modestly and home sales climbed from 15-year lows in August. Stocks had fallen sharply at the opening after claims for unemployment benefits jumped unexpectedly last week and new signs emerged of a slowdown in Europe.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 15 points in late morning trading after being down as much as 94 shortly after the opening bell. Investors hoping to avoid risk continued to pile into Treasurys, sending interest rates lower.
The Conference Board, a private research group, said its index of leading economic indicators increased more than expected in August. The gauge is designed to predict future growth, so a jump in the index means the economy will likely continue to expand in the coming months.

Stocks waver as traders move into Treasurys, gold
Stock rally put on hold as traders opt for Treasurys, gold after Fed’s latest statement
NEW YORK (AP) — Traders put their September stock rally on hold and moved into Treasurys and gold Wednesday, a day after the Federal Reserve said it was ready to take more action to boost the economy.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 23 points in late morning trading.
The Fed didn’t announce specific steps in its announcement Tuesday, but investors interpreted its statement as a signal that the central bank could step up its bond-purchasing program down the line. The Fed said the economy is still recovering but at a sluggish pace.
Investors had little incentive to move more money into stocks, so they turned their focus to bonds and gold. Treasurys rose again, pushing their yields lower, and gold climbed to another record.
