Stocks tiptoed higher early Thursday as signs of improvement in the labor market overshadowed a rash of ho-hum retail sales.

The Dow Jones industrial average added 25 points, or 0.3%, in the early going. The S&P 500 index rose 4 points, or 0.5%. The Nasdaq composite gained 12 points, or 0.6%.

The Labor Department’s report on jobless claims showed a slight slip to 621,000 in the week ended May 30 from the revised 625,000 in the prior week. The figure was close to the 620,000 projected by a consensus of economists.

Also, continuing claims declined for the first time since January.

A revised reading on productivity showed an increase of 1.6% for the first quarter, compared to an initial reading of a 0.8% rise. This was higher than the revised gain of 1.2% expected by Briefing.com consensus.

Defense Solutions Holding Inc. / DFSH Awarded First Commercial Contract in Iraq

Defense Solutions, Inc., an international project management and executive consulting firm, a wholly owned subsidiary of Defense Solutions Holdings, Inc., announced today that the Company has signed a $750,000 contract to supply pipeline parts to North Gas Company, a state-owned company of Iraq. This contract represents Defense Solutions’ first commercial-based contract in Iraq and an important milestone in our commitment to the rebuilding process.

“This first commercial contract in Iraq illustrates the importance of our in-country presence, solidifying our relationship with the Iraqi government, and the significance of Defense Solutions commitment to rebuilding Iraq,” commented Defense Solutions’ Chief Executive, Colonel Timothy Ringgold, US Army (Retired). “Today’s announcement represents the tip of the iceberg.

We anticipate additional significantly larger contracts from Iraq as their government continues to focus on rebuilding the country. Contracts may consist of various military and non-military projects including rebuilding of homes, businesses and infrastructures such as roads and bridges. I look forward to updating our shareholders with additional developments and revenue opportunities.”

Stocks fluctuated Friday as investors tried to reconcile some mixed economic data.

The group representing Chicago-area purchasing executives reported a much steeper drop in Midwest business activity than analysts predicted. The Dow Jones industrial average, after rising in the first minutes of trading, turned lower.

The data followed the Commerce Department’s report on first-quarter gross domestic product. The GDP’s contraction of 5.7 percent was slightly larger than analyst forecasts, and personal spending was revised lower. But the drop was smaller than the 6.1 percent estimated last month, and the data showed corporate profits rising.

On the last day of trading in May, the Dow is still on track for a third straight monthly gain. The index would have to drop 236 points Friday to finish the month lower.

May, however, has been the shakiest month since the market’s rally began in early March. Investors’ enthusiasm about the economy’s stabilization is turning into skepticism about how strong growth will really be once a bottom is hit.

New worries are weighing on investors: Climbing interest rates, a weaker dollar and rising commodity prices. Crude oil prices recently hit a six-month high above $65 a barrel, while the dollar on Friday sank to multi-month lows against the euro and British pound. Some analysts say these developments are simply the consequence of a recovery in the economy and the financial markets, but others warn these trends could threaten the economy’s health in the long-term.

Another more short-term obstacle for the market is General Motors Corp.’s expected bankruptcy filing on Monday, the automaker’s restructuring deadline. The market has been factoring in the likelihood of a GM bankruptcy for months, but investors still are unsure what the fallout might be for auto suppliers and other companies.
In early trading Friday, the Dow slipped 10.67 points, or 0.1 percent, to 8,393.13. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 0.45, or 0.1 percent, to 906.38. The Nasdaq composite index fell 1.40, or 0.1 percent, to 1,750.39.

Yesterday’s Top Performing Small Cap stock:

U.S. Geothermal, Inc. (AMEX: HTM) was a SmallCapVoice.com top performer moving up over 2% on trading volume of 626,084 shares.

U.S. Geothermal is a renewable energy development company that is operating geothermal power plants at Raft River, Idaho and at the San Emidio Desert in Nevada. The Neal Hot Springs project in eastern Oregon is being developed and is expected to be operational in 2011. The San Emidio project is currently under development to replace the existing old power plant with a new efficient plant. U.S. Geothermal holds, through ownership or lease, geothermal rights of lands that comprise the Raft River project in Idaho, San Emidio, Granite Ranch, and Gerlach in Nevada, and the Neal Hot Springs project in Oregon.

That means the automaker is almost definitely headed for bankruptcy protection. GM has until Monday to finish restructuring or file for Chapter 11. The announcement dampened the mood of investors who had grown more optimistic about the economy after Tuesday’s positive reading on consumer confidence.

Investors didn’t find relief in a bigger-than-expected increase in home sales because a rise in inventories fanned worries that homes languishing on the market would continue to crimp the economy by hurting consumers and banks that hold mortgages.

The National Association of Realtors said sales of previously occupied homes rose from March to April as buyers hunted for bargains. Sales rose 2.9 percent to an annual rate of 4.68 million last month. But the trade group also said the number of unsold homes on the market at the end of April rose almost 9 percent to nearly 4 million. That’s a 10-month supply at the current sales pace.

In midmorning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 19.43, or 0.2 percent, to 8,454.06. The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index slipped 0.88, or 0.1 percent, to 909.45, and the Nasdaq composite index rose 7.77, or 0.4 percent, to 1,758.20.

The Neal Hot Springs project in eastern Oregon is being developed and is expected to be operational in 2011.
Investors are again examining the housing market for clues about the economy. The National Association of Home Builders is set to release its index of builders’ confidence for May at 1 p.m. Eastern.

There was some upbeat news on the housing industry before the opening bell. Lowe’s Cos., the nation’s second largest home improvement chain, posted a 22 percent drop in its first-quarter earnings but results topped Wall Street’s forecasts.

Banking company State Street Corp. said it plans to raise funds through stock and debt offerings as part of an effort to repay the $2 billion the government loaned as part of its financial rescue last fall. State Street, which specializes in serving institutional investors and wealthy customers, said it expects to raise $1.45 billion from the stock offer alone. The stock slipped 1 percent in electronic trading.

Analysts say the ability of banks to turn to the market to raise cash is a welcome sign of stability, even if the introduction of added shares makes those already in circulation worth less.

Last week, the Dow slid 3.6 percent, the S&P 500 index lost 5 percent and the Nasdaq fell 3.4 percent as investors worried that the economy’s recovery might be further off than hoped after stocks rallied since hitting 12-year lows more than two months ago.

Beyond the housing sales report, Wall Street will be looking this week to data Tuesday on housing construction and regional manufacturing on Thursday.

Yesterday’s Top Performing SmallCapVoice.com stocks:

Alkane, Inc. is dedicated to the development and sales of alternative fuels and additives which reduce the cost of operating and maintaining vehicles. Additional benefits of Alkane, Inc.’s product offerings include positive environmental impact through the reduction of harmful emissions and a lessened U.S. dependence on foreign oil due to a decrease in crude oil dependent diesel fuel consumption.

Stocks are trending higher in early trading on more signs that the economy’s slide is slowing. The Labor Department said consumer prices in April were flat, as economists predicted. Excluding declining energy and food prices, core consumer prices edged up 0.3 percent, a bit higher than forecast.

New York-area manufacturing activity and industrial production contracted less than economists expected. They also shrank significantly less than they did earlier in the year, fitting a trend seen in most data since early March: that the economy continues to slide, but at a slower pace.

Investors are awaiting a midmorning report from the University of Michigan on consumer sentiment, as well as readings next week on the housing market. After European countries reported on Friday a massive 2.5 percent contraction in the first quarter, investors remain nervous about pushing stocks higher.

Wall Street’s huge spring rally has hit a lull. The government’s stress tests of banks are done, earnings reports are winding down and the first wave of April economic data has been released. Investors are growing concerned that perhaps they got too optimistic when they saw signs of the economy bottoming.

In early trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 8.05, or 0.1 percent, to 8,339.37. The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 1.45, or 0.2 percent, to 891.62, and the Nasdaq composite index slipped 1.11, or 0.1 percent, to 1,688.10.

(OTC Bulletin Board: DFSH), announces that the Company has signed an agreement with iRobot Corporation (Nasdaq: IRBT), to distribute its iRobot PackBot®, a multi-mission tactical mobile robot, in Iraq and Afghanistan. iRobot is a designer and developer of robots for the consumer, government, and industrial markets worldwide. The iRobot PackBot will be used by military and government ground forces.

The iRobot PackBot, currently in use by US forces, is a perfect fit for Iraqi Security Forces, as the responsibility to find and neutralize roadside bombs, car bombs and other IEDs, as well as unexploded ordinance shifts from US forces to Iraqi forces. Defense Solutions will offer the iRobot PackBot to allow the Iraqi Security forces to perform dangerous missions while keeping military personnel and first responders out of harm’s way.

“We are excited to be a distributor of iRobot’s PackBot product line in Iraq and Afghanistan,” commented LTC (Ret) John A. Little, President of Defense Solutions. “iRobot provides one of the best tactical mobile robots in the world, and we are committed to delivering these units to countries that desperately need to improve the safety of their government, military, and people. We hope to expand on our relationship with iRobot as we continue to build our presence in countries that are in need of our end-to-end solutions.”
