The Labor Department said lower energy prices pushed U.S. wholesale prices lower in September, leaving a larger-than-expected monthly decline in the producer price index. Wall Street economists expected a flat reading. The drop comes after a steep rise in August.

Separately, the Commerce Department said home building rose a third time in four months during September, reflecting higher sales this year. The increase, however, was smaller than expected.

The reports overshadowed earnings reports from companies including chemical maker DuPont and Pfizer Inc., the world’s biggest pharmaceutical company.

DuPont and health insurer UnitedHealth Group Inc. each cited cost-cutting efforts as they reported better results for the July-September period from a year earlier. Pfizer also reported that lower expenses boosted its earnings.

Caterpillar Inc. said its profit declined in the latest quarter as sales fell short.

Disappointing results from Bank of New York Mellon did little to sway the market. The financial company took a hefty charge during the third quarter to restructure its securities portfolio, resulting in a loss of almost $2.5 billion.

Better-than-expected earnings reports from Apple Inc. and Texas Instruments Inc. late Monday helped restore investor confidence that was shaken late last week by big banks’ loan losses.

In morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 20.10, or 0.2 percent, to 10,072.09.The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 2.52, or 0.2 percent, to 1,095.39, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 3.16, or 0.2 percent, to 2,173.16.

Yesterday’s Top Performing Small Cap Stock:

Viper Networks, Inc. (Pink Sheets: VPER) was a SmallCapVoice.com top performer yesterday closing up over 20% on trading volume of 658,124 shares.

Viper Networks, Inc. announces that it has entered into an Agreement with a leading telecommunications operator in the Kingdom of Bahrain, for sales, distribution and other value-added services, as part of the Company’s continuing expansion with leading telecom operators throughout Asia, the Middle East, Australia and other continents, for its recently awarded India telecom license.

To complete their telecommunications infrastructure and provide a full range of fixed and nomadic telecommunications services throughout the country, the telecom operator for Bahrain has been working with Viper Networks and Trimax Wireless, a telecommunications industry supplier of WiMAX and wireless technology.

The Company expects to complete network testing shortly and close this distribution agreement and announce details within the next 2-3 weeks.

Stocks fell sharply early Friday after a bigger-than-expected loss at Bank of America and a weak report from General Electric reminded investors that businesses and consumers are still struggling to pay off their debts.

Bank of America Corp. said it lost more than $2 billion after preferred dividends in the third quarter, steeper than what analysts had been expecting. One of the largest recipients of government bailout funds, the bank said its losses from failed loans came to almost $10 billion.

The results echoed reports earlier this week from rivals Citigroup Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. that also showed higher loan losses and underscored the challenges the economy still faces, including high unemployment and anemic consumer spending.

General Electric Co.’s report also showed signs of credit weakness. Its profit dropped 44 percent in the most recent quarter, hurt by much lower earnings at its lending arm, GE Capital.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 80.63, or 0.8 percent, to 9,982.31. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 8.87, or 0.8 percent, to 1,087.69, and the Nasdaq composite index fell 14.52, or 0.7 percent, to 2,158.77.

The reports from Bank of America and GE overshadowed solid results from Google Inc., IBM Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. after the closing bell Thursday.

Yesterday’s Top Performing Small Cap Stock:

Green Star Alternative Energy, Inc. (Pink Sheets: GSAE) was a SmallCapVoice.com top performer yesterday closing up over 6% on trading volume of 169,085 shares.

Green Star Alternative Energy, Inc. recently announced that an analysis of the Veliko Gradiste zone demonstrates the potential for 50MW of wind energy development. As per the agreement with the municipality, Green Star is exploring the economic viability of the region’s wind resources to determine whether to exercise the right to develop wind power and supply the area with green electricity.

The Company’s wind resource engineer, MSc. Nikola Vasiljevic, has sited three separate micro locations in his report: two in Ram and one in Deliblatska Pescara. Plans to erect one of the Company’s wind sensors at the Ram site are underway. The Municipality of Veliko Gradiste is located in north-east Serbia approximately 100 km east of the capital, Belgrade. Its territory encompasses 344 square km on the right bank of the Danube River and left bank of the Pek River.

Miodrag Andric, CEO of Green Star Alternative Energy, stated: “The Company is committed to increasing its portfolio of wind farm development locations. By utilizing comprehensive analysis and meticulous exploration systems, Green Star will continue to acquire gainful opportunities in the wind energy sector.”

About GSAE

Green Star Alternative Energy is an environmentally conscious, renewable energy company working to develop more than 300 MW (megawatts) of clean electricity through wind energy. The corporate revenue model is two-fold: the use of a renewable resource allows not only for the creation of environmentally friendly energy, but the granting of carbon (greenhouse gas) emission credits which may be traded and sold. Green Star is pursuing a significant opportunity to provide clean energy to the growing Republic of Serbia and neighbouring European countries. Through a joint venture with key wind farm and power trading company Notos, Green Star will become the nation’s first developer of wind power. GSAE is focused on green technology and sustainable energy programs like wind turbines, hydro electric power generation, and other renewable electricity models.

Stocks sold off broadly Monday after China’s main index plunged 6.7 percent, adding to a nearly 3 percent drop on Friday. The selling of Chinese shares has been fed by concerns over a tightening in bank lending that could hurt the country’s economy. That in turn has weighed on markets around the globe this month. Markets in Japan and Europe were also lower.

There was little U.S. economic news expected Monday, but key readings come later this week on manufacturing and employment in August that have the ability to either sustain or upset the market’s massive six-month rally.

After rising more than 45 percent from 12-year lows in March, the Dow Jones industrial average stands about 500 points away from 10,000. Investors have grown increasingly worried that the market may have gotten too far ahead of the economy. Without evidence of actual economic growth, analysts have warned that the market’s rally could fizzle in the coming weeks, especially as traders head into September, historically a rough month for the stock market.

"There’s enough jitteriness to set the stage for a decline," said Hugh Johnson, chairman and chief investment officer of Johnson Illington Advisors. "The economic numbers could neutralize the nervousness, could put portfolio managers’ worries to rest."

Two big deals between The Walt Disney Co. and Marvel Entertainment Inc. and oilfield services companies Baker Hughes Inc. and BJ Services Co. did little to support the market.

In late morning trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 74.22, or 0.8 percent, to 9,469.98. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 9.58, or 0.9 percent, to 1,019.35, while the Nasdaq composite index fell 19.90, or 1.0 percent, to 2,008.87.

Today’s SmallCapVoice.com Hot Stock to Watch:

Stocks were mixed in early trading Friday as technology shares got a boost from a rosy sales outlook from Intel Corp.

Intel shares rose nearly 5 percent, helping to lift the Nasdaq composite index more than 0.5 percent, after the world’s largest maker of computer chips said it now expects sales of up to $9.2 billion in the current quarter, up from its previous forecast of as much as $8.9 billion.

Intel’s upbeat report came a day after computer maker Dell Inc. posted better-than-expected results for its May-July quarter. While Dell’s sales continued to fall because of reduced spending by consumers and businesses, the company said it has seen signs of improvement.

Despite a rise of nearly 5 percent in the Dow Jones industrials over the past eight days, the market remains cautious. Investors are worried that the market’s huge rally this spring and summer, which pushed stocks up more than 45 percent since early March, may have run its course. Trading has been choppy and volume has been light as summer on Wall Street winds to a close.

In early trading, the Dow Jones industrial average fell 17.46, or 0.2 percent, to 9,563.17. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 0.54, or 0.1 percent, to 1,031.52, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 13.36, or 0.7 percent, to 2,041.09.

The Green Baron Report also issued a new “Stock Pick” profile dated Tuesday, August 4th, 2009 to its members and is available on their website. The report focused on how Green Star is moving forward to develop wind energy projects to the under supplied market in Serbia. The report also detailed how its Joint Venture with Notos, a private Serbian company dedicated to renewable energy, enables Green Star to establish a leadership role in the development and supply of wind power in Serbia and the Balkan Peninsula.
