Stocks are lower after weak jobs data and as the dollar continues to rise against the euro

Stock are lower this morning after an unexpected rise in new jobless claims suggested continued labor market weakness.

The Labor Department said that the number of new claims for unemployment benefits rose to 480,000 last week, up 7,000 from the previous week.

Markets in Europe and Asia also slipped as the dollar rose against the euro on speculation the Federal Reserve might increase rates sooner than expected.

Stocks and are higher even as the dollar rises as investors try to predict when interest rates might start rising

The dollar rose against other currencies ahead of comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who will speak before the Economic Club of Washington. Bernanke has insisted that the Fed plans to keep rates low for the foreseeable future, but investors believe that as the economy improves, the central bank might move to raise rates and withdraw some of its support measures. That could reverse the dollar’s months-long slide and put a dent in the stock market’s advance.

Stocks mixed in early trading after ADP report shows job losses declining, but miss forecast

Investors are making few moves in early trading Wednesday after a private group’s report showed job cuts declined in November for the eighth straight month, but not as much as forecast.

Major stock indexes are wavering after the ADP National Employment Report said 169,000 private sector jobs were lost in November, slightly worse than the 160,000 cuts expected by economists polled by Thomson Reuters.
