Stocks and are higher even as the dollar rises as investors try to predict when interest rates might start rising

The dollar rose against other currencies ahead of comments from Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, who will speak before the Economic Club of Washington. Bernanke has insisted that the Fed plans to keep rates low for the foreseeable future, but investors believe that as the economy improves, the central bank might move to raise rates and withdraw some of its support measures. That could reverse the dollar’s months-long slide and put a dent in the stock market’s advance.

Concerns about the Fed’s next move have heightened since Friday, when investors got one of the best indications yet that the economy is strengthening. The Labor Department said employers cut fewer jobs in November than at any time since the recession began in late 2007 and the unemployment rate dropped to 10 percent from a 26-year high of 10.2 percent. High unemployment is considered one of the economy’s biggest obstacles to growth.

Stocks rose after the employment report, but gave up most of their early gains as expectations of a possible rate hike grew and the dollar rose. Still, some analysts say the market may have overreacted Friday, and that trading is likely to fall back into its pattern since March of a falling dollar, rising stocks.

In early trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 44.29, or 0.4 percent, to 10,433.19. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index rose 3.70, or 0.3 percent, to 1,109.68, while the Nasdaq composite index rose 5.14, or 0.2 percent, to 2,199.49.

Stocks are sharply higher following better than expected November employment data

Stock prices are surging in early trading after the government said the nation’s jobless rate dropped to 10 percent in November and far fewer jobs were lost.

The Labor Department says the economy shed 11,000 jobs last month, an improvement from October’s revised total of 111,000. That’s also much better than the 130,000 job losses that Wall Street economists expected.

The unemployment rate fell to 10 percent from 10.2 percent in October, where economists expected it to remain at a 26-year high.

But many analysts still expect the jobless rate to keep climbing into next year.

The Dow Jones industrial average is up 103.31, or 1 percent, at 10,449.46. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is up 12.19, or 1.1 percent, at 1,112.11. The Nasdaq composite index is up 30.75, or 1.4 percent, at 2,203.89.

Stocks turn mixed as contraction in the service industry fuels concerns about an economic recovery

Stocks are paring their gains as unexpected weakness in the service industry stirs worries about the economy’s ability to recover.

The Institute for Supply Management says Thursday its service industry index has fallen to 48.7 in November from 50.6 in October. That’s well below the reading of 51.5 analysts had been expecting and signals contraction in the industry.

Stocks had been higher at the start of trading on a Labor Department report that new claims for unemployment benefits fell unexpectedly for the fifth straight week.

The Dow Jones industrial average is down 3 at 10,450. It had been up 20 ahead of the report. The Standard & Poor’s 500 index is up 1 at 1,110, while the Nasdaq composite index is up 10 at 2,195.

Stocks are slightly higher as investors weighed concern about fallout from Dubai’s debt crisis against improving signs from U.S. consumers

After initial sharp drops late last week, global markets are stabilizing following an announcement that Dubai World, the main investment arm of the Persian Gulf city-state, asked to defer payments on $60 billion in debt for six months.

There was worry that a debt default could touch off a new round of credit market worries, which plagued stocks last year as Lehman Brothers collapsed and banks stopped lending to each other.

However, it appears there is limited exposure to the debt in the U.S., which has eased some concerns. The United Arab Emirates, where Dubai is located, also said Sunday it will make extra funding available to all banks in the country, including foreign banks with local offices.

Analysts say European banks have more exposure than their U.S. counterparts. Asian stocks rallied sharply on Monday, while European markets were lower. Dubai’s market, which was opened Monday for the first time since the debt deferment announcement, fell nearly 6 percent.

Some encouraging signs from U.S. consumers helped to offset concerns about fallout from the Dubai debt crisis. Consumer spending accounts for more than two-thirds of all U.S. economic activity, so a robust holiday shopping season would put investors at ease that the economy is recovering.

Investors have been worried that rising unemployment would make shoppers uncomfortable about spending during the holidays. A key report on the nation’s unemployment rate is due out Friday.

Preliminary figures by ShopperTrak, a research firm that tracks more than 50,000 outlets, showed sales rose 0.5 percent on Friday, the kickoff to the holiday shopping season. Online sales jumped 11 percent Thursday and Friday, according to comScore, an Internet research firm.

In early trading, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 25.70, or 0.25 percent, to 10,335.62.

Stocks are higher as the dollar weakened and overseas markets strengthen

Stocks have been trading in the opposite direction of the dollar in recent months. As the dollar weakens, it has pushed the value of commodities higher because they become cheaper for foreign investors. Gold hit a new record high Monday. Strong commodity prices also helps push the price of energy and material stocks higher.

The dollar retreated as Federal Reserve official James Bullard said the central bank should continue to buy mortgage-backed securities after the program is supposed to expire in March. That would continue to keep interest rates low.

Overseas markets showed strength. European markets are sharply higher after new data showed the economic recovery is gathering pace in the 16 countries that use the euro.

U.S. investors will get plenty of economic data during the holiday-shortened week to sort through and determine if the stock market’s rally has outpaced any actual recovery in the economy. Multiple reports on the housing market and strength of the consumer as well as data on the nation’s total economic output in the third quarter will be released before the Thanksgiving holiday Thursday.

The dollar mostly fell against other major currencies. The ICE Futures U.S. dollar index declined 0.59 to 75.07.

Gold prices rose sharply, hitting a new record. Gold climbed $17.40 to $1,164.20 an ounce Monday. It rose as high as $1,167.80 earlier in trading.
