S&P, Nasdaq fall below 50-day moving averages

NEW YORK (Reuters) – U.S. stocks fell on Tuesday, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq falling below their 50-day moving average, as a negative outlook from Hewlett-Packard Co (NYSE:HPQ) and weak U.S. economic data raised jitters about the state of the recovery.

Tech stocks fell as investors sold recent winners due to unease about pockets of weakness in the U.S. economy.

cut its financial forecasts because of problems stemming from Japan’s earthquake, soft PC sales and lowered expectations for its service business. HP’s stock was down 6.5 percent at $37.21.

Stocks waver as investors await Fed speech

Stocks mixed ahead of Federal Reserve Chairman Bernanke’s news conference on economy

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks wavered between modest gains and losses Wednesday ahead of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s latest assessment on the health of the U.S. economy.

Bernanke is expected to discuss the job market, inflation and the prospects for economic growth in a news conference following the conclusion of the Fed’s two-day policymaking meeting. Investors want to know when the Fed will begin raising interest rates. They also expect the Fed to confirm that its $600 billion bond-buying program will end as scheduled in June.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 4 points, or less than 0.1 percent, to 12,599. It had been up as many as 30 points earlier in the day.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 fell 3 or 0.2 percent, to 1,345. The Nasdaq composite index fell 4, or 0.1 percent, to 2,844.

Stocks trade mixed on weak jobs report

US stocks barely move after gov’t reports an increase in claims for unemployment benefits

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks were mixed Thursday after the government reported that more people applied for unemployment benefits last week.

The Labor Department said 409,000 Americans applied for unemployment benefits. That’s up from 388,000 the previous week, when applications fell to their lowest level in more than two years. The number of applications suggests a moderate amount of job growth.

The report came a day after ADP, a payroll processor, estimated that private companies added 297,000 jobs last month, far more than the 100,000 economists expected. That report pushed stock prices higher and Treasury prices lower as investors became more optimistic about the jobs market.

In a week with several reports on employment, the most important one will arrive on Friday when the Labor Department releases its monthly survey of all U.S. payrolls and the unemployment rate. Economists expect the rate will fall to 9.7 percent from 9.8 percent.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are inching lower as traders are cautious before the Federal Reserve releases minutes from its September meeting.

The details could provide clues about the central bank’s widely expected plans to stimulate the economy through stepped-up bond purchases. The Fed has hinted it is prepared to help jump-start the economy, though it provided few details about its plans.

Small gains in the technology sector helped the market pare early losses.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 26, or 0.2 percent, to 10,985 in midday trading Tuesday.

Progress underway on NuVim’s revitalization

The initial steps of revitalization for NuVim have produced excellent results. During the past month, actions have resulted in significantly improving NuVim’s balance sheet, with reduction of total debt by $1.9 million. With pending investment within the next 30 days, additional debt reduction of $500,000 – $700,000 is forecast by NuVim management.
