Wall Street rises on solid manufacturing data
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Stocks rose on Tuesday as solid manufacturing data in the United States and Europe helped investors turn their attention away from the turmoil in the Middle East to hopes that a global economic recovery was on track.
The U.S. manufacturing sector expanded at its fastest pace since May 2004 in January, and prices paid jumped more than expected, according to an industry report.
“It is a modest increase telling us that the manufacturing sector of the economy continues to improve somewhat steadily since July of 2010,” said Hugh Johnson, chief investment officer of Hugh Johnson Advisors LLC in Albany, New York.
“This is on balance, good news and I defy anybody to find a problem with this.”

Stocks trade mixed on weak jobs report
US stocks barely move after gov’t reports an increase in claims for unemployment benefits
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks were mixed Thursday after the government reported that more people applied for unemployment benefits last week.
The Labor Department said 409,000 Americans applied for unemployment benefits. That’s up from 388,000 the previous week, when applications fell to their lowest level in more than two years. The number of applications suggests a moderate amount of job growth.
The report came a day after ADP, a payroll processor, estimated that private companies added 297,000 jobs last month, far more than the 100,000 economists expected. That report pushed stock prices higher and Treasury prices lower as investors became more optimistic about the jobs market.
In a week with several reports on employment, the most important one will arrive on Friday when the Labor Department releases its monthly survey of all U.S. payrolls and the unemployment rate. Economists expect the rate will fall to 9.7 percent from 9.8 percent.

Stocks dip as traders await Fed meeting details
Traders become cautious before Federal Reserve releases notes from September meeting
NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are inching lower as traders are cautious before the Federal Reserve releases minutes from its September meeting.
The details could provide clues about the central bank’s widely expected plans to stimulate the economy through stepped-up bond purchases. The Fed has hinted it is prepared to help jump-start the economy, though it provided few details about its plans.
Small gains in the technology sector helped the market pare early losses.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 26, or 0.2 percent, to 10,985 in midday trading Tuesday.
