Stocks waver on mixed earnings, rising dollar

Stocks waver following earnings report, drop in home prices, rise in consumer confidence

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks were narrowly mixed in midday trading Tuesday after a rise in consumer confidence offset disappointing news on home prices and earnings.

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 3 points, while broader indexes were mixed. Stocks started the day lower after weak results from Texas Instruments Inc., U.S. Steel Corp. and Bristol-Myers Squibb Co. A better report about consumer confidence in October helped stocks pare their losses in midday trading.

"The consumer confidence numbers were encouraging," said Bernie McSherry, vice president of strategic initiatives at Cuttone and Co. It’s a sign shoppers "may be reaching into their wallets heading into the holiday shopping season."

Ford Motor Co. and Coach Inc. were among the few bright spots in the big batch of earnings reports released Tuesday.

Dow falls 100 amid mixed earnings reports

Stocks down after disappointing reports from Apple and IBM

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are trading sharply lower following a flurry of mixed earnings reports from corporate heavyweights.

Disappointing news from Apple and IBM are pushing technology shares down Tuesday. Both beat earnings forecasts, but they also said profitability was falling for key business lines.

Also weighing on stock prices is an announcement that China raised interest rates to slow inflation.

It’s a busy week for investors, as 113 companies in the Standard and Poor’s index of 500 companies report earnings.

In midday trading, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 100, or 0.9 percent, at 11,043.

Stocks climb after Citigroup tops forecasts

Stocks climb after Citigroup’s 3rd-quarter results give financial stocks a lift

NEW YORK (AP) — An upbeat start to a busy week of earnings pushed stocks higher Monday.

Citigroup Inc.’s better-than-expected results drove financial stocks higher, putting an end to a recent slide in bank shares. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 47 points in late morning trading.

Citigroup said it was helped by fewer customers failing to repay loans during the third quarter, another sign that the worst losses from loan defaults could be in the past. The better results from Citi lifted shares of other banks, which had swooned last week as fallout spread from accusations that banks had improperly processed large amounts of foreclosures. Wells Fargo & Co. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. both rose about 2 percent.

The market is likely to turn its focus to corporate earnings throughout the week as dozens of large companies release results. Broad economic reports have been the main factor driving stock trading in recent months.
